Prince Valiant keeps his youthful vigor
Those of us who read newspaper comics know that Prince Valiant and his lovely wife, Aleta, have been more than dysfunctional for the past several months because of the evil witch, Maldubh, whose husband, Draco, has been challenging our hero, Valiant, with a fight to the death, aided by Maldubh's casting spells upon the couple, rendering them almost unable to summon the strength to fight back.
The key word in this triumphant story's end is "almost." We always knew our stars from King Arthur's court could not be vanquished. The other thing we know is that, although Aleta and Valiant appeared to have won the malevolent challenge, you never know for sure. With our prince, his enemies drown, fall into abysses and suffer other devastations only to reappear months or years later, mad as hell for having lost to the noble and ever-valiant Valiant and determined to take revenge upon him and/or his beautiful and clever wife and almost equally valiant family.
As Sir Gawain, Val's noble and equally valiant buddy, said - noting that Draco would never surface again from his fall into the swirling dark moat waters - "... But in the end, Val gave us his usual good showing. ... He is never coming up, drowned by his own wife's witchy doing ..." It's inspiring to know that, at least in King Arthur's court, the good guys win. But that was in the Sept. 25th comics. On Oct. 2, we learn from Val's daughters, Valeta and Karen, that Aleta is still in a dark space due to the evil Maldubh's witchcraft. But we need not have despaired - the daughters and Aleta's pal, Maeve, also have the mystic powers of women to cast and uncast spells.
Lo and behold: Val is called into the room to see the result of their incantations, which leads us to the happy but unbelievable ending. Val enters the room and Aleta jumps into his arms. As we say in Texas, she "hugs his neck" with her arms. The unbelievable part is that she also encircles his body with a leg-hug. Roughly calculating their ages by adding up the years I've been reading Prince Valiant, I estimate Val is at least in his 70s, possibly early 80s, and Aleta isn't much younger.
